Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay born August 24 72, at Long Beach in CA. As a child DuVernay's Aunt Denise was a great influence on her enthusiasm for artistic expression and creative thinking. She worked as a night nurse to allow her aunt to have the time she needed during the day to indulge in the passion of art, literature, and theater. DuVernay was first introduced to the film West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay discovered through experience the art of being a good instrument to engage in political activism. DuVernay was also taught by her mother, with a conscience for social issues, and pushed DuVernay to exhibit her artistic talents. DuVernay was brought up in Compton with her parents but spent the summers with Lowndes County Alabama. This is the place where her father's family has lived for many generations. DuVernay's Dad recalled seeing the Civil Rights Movement's historic march along the Edmund Pettus Bridge near the town of Selma Alabama. DuVernay visited Selma during the summer months and was in awe of the idea to film on the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay was a graduate of Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California in the year 1990. After graduation she was enrolled at the University of California Los Angeles where she received certificates in English and African American studies. DuVernay discovered a passion for the field of broadcast journalism while a student. She was an intern with CBS News at the time of O.J. Simpson Trial. DuVernay remembers being given an assignment to watch the residence and scrutinizing the trash of one of members of juries. After being disappointed in journalism by the tasks she was handed and deciding to go after the field of publicity. DuVernay was employed by a tiny studio as a Junior Publicist immediately after graduation. The year 1999 was the time she launched her own business of public relations dubbed The DuVernay Agency. Additionally, she started a variety of lifestyle and promotional networks, including Urban Beauty Collective. Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful, and Urban Thought Collective.
